The Art of Storytelling
Every Tuesday + Thursday for the past few weeks, our group (both Roots + Branches) has been exploring the "Art of Storytelling" module on Khan Academy. It combines advice from Disney/Pixar animators and storytellers, along with instructions and suggestions to writing your own story. From the beginning our learners were interested, but many were hesitant to share. It can be intimidating to talk in front of your peers, let alone kids who are older than you.
But just as kids do, they adapt and learn. It has been incredible to watch every learner grow from this collective experience. We've all gotten to know each other a little better too!
In the photo above, one of our youngest learners shares her ideas for a main character and world in her own story. Kids of all ages listened and offered feedback. To think about the courage and safety she felt in this moment brings tears to my eyes. This is the space we always dreamed of creating. This is the world we want to live in. A world where all children know love and respect from their peers, as well as a sense of self worth and dignity.
We are looking forward to seeing where this long term project takes us. We will check back in next month with an update from more of our storytellers.
